dc.description.abstractThis research is entitled Empathy-Based Therapeutic Communication at the Medan Children's Oncology Foundation. The purpose of this study was to determine the knowledge of volunteers regarding empathy-based therapeutic communication, the application of empathy-based therapeutic communication by volunteers to children with cancer, and the obstacles experienced by volunteers in applying empathy-based therapeutic communication to children with cancer. This research was analyzed using social exchange theory. This research uses qualitative methods, data obtained through in-depth interviews, observation, and literature study. This research involved four informants and two triangulators who were selected using purposive and snowball techniques. Observations were made at the Medan Children's Oncology Foundation. The research data were analyzed using NVivo software. The results of this study indicate the existence of volunteer knowledge related to therapeutic communication with the level of knowledge at the level of applying, analyzing, and evaluating by applying good communication strategies when communicating. Volunteers apply the stages of therapeutic communication consisting of the pre-interaction stage by preparing themselves and understanding the character and condition of children with cancer, the orientation stage is the stage of introduction to children with cancer, the work stage by conducting therapeutic communication with children with cancer and parents of children with cancer, and the termination stage is carried out to end communication by providing support. The obstacles experienced by volunteers come from themselves, namely emotional barriers when conducting therapeutic communication to children with cancer.en_US
