dc.description.abstract | Failure of bracket attachment to enamel surface is a common problem in
fixed orthodontic treatment. Previous research has stated that the incidence of this
failure is multifactorial, but it is largely associated with incorrect bonding procedure.
This study was aimed to investigate the effect of different concentrations of
nanochitosan powder added to prophylaxis paste on the shear bond strength of
stainless steel bracket attachments. The study included three groups with a control
group without nanochitosan powder and two experimental groups where 1% and 3%
nanochitosan were added to prophylaxis paste. Twenty-seven extracted mandibular
first/second premolar (n=9) were bonded to stainless steel brackets following a
standardized procedure. The samples were immersed in artificial saliva and stored
in an incubator at 37oC for 7 days. Shear bond strength was assessed by using
Universal Testing Machine. Data were analyzed using one-way ANOVA test.
Results: The shear bond strength mean values in control group is 5,04±0,22 MPa,
1% nanochitosan is 6,51±0,21 MPa, and 3% nanochitosan is 7,88±0,41 MPa.
Stastistical analysis showed a significant difference among the groups (p<0,05).
Nanochitosan powder added to prophylaxis paste significantly enhances the shear
bond strength of stainless steel bracket attachments. | en_US |
