Corrosion of orthodontic wires can increase the roughness of the surface and weaken the orthodontic wire which will greatly affect the tensile strength of the material. The purpose of this study was to determine the difference in tensile strength of Thermal Nickel Titanium orthodontic wires after immersion in artificial saliva and ethanol extract of African leaf (Vernonia amygdalina Del.). The samples of this study were Thermal Nickel Titanium (RMO) orthodontic wires with a diameter of 0.016 inches and a length of 5 cm as many as 30 wires. The sample was divided into 3 groups, namely the group before artificial saliva and African leaf ethanol extract immersion, after artificial saliva immersion, and after African leaf ethanol extract immersion. Then the samples were immersed in artificial saliva and African leaf ethanol extract at a concentration of 1560 ppm in an incubator at 37°C for 7 days. Testing the tensile strength of the samples before and after immersion in artificial saliva and African leaf ethanol extract was carried out using a Universal Testing Machine. Data were analyzed using the Independent Sample T-Test. The average value of tensile strength in the group before immersion is 873,06 ± 72,61 MPa while after immersion in artificial saliva and African leaf ethanol extract with a concentration of 1560 ppm is 603.08 ± 46.42 MPa and 685,12 ± 38.91 MPa. The analysis showed that there was no significant difference in tensile strength between artificial saliva and African leaf ethanol extract at 1560 ppm. African leaf ethanol extract at 1560 ppm does not significantly affect the tensile strength of Thermal Nickel Titanium orthodontic wire.en_US
