| dc.description.abstract | The purpose of this study was to determine, describe, and analyze the
perceptions of esports activists regarding the development of esports and its
economic opportunities in Medan City. This type of research is qualitative
descriptive research, namely the researcher conducts research by obtaining data
through field facts. The data collection methods used were through data reduction,
distributing questionnaires, and interviews with a number of game players from the
gaming community, professional game athletes, game content creators, and a
number of experts from the esports organization, the Medan City branch of the
Indonesian Esports Executive Board (PBESI).
The results of the research show that the perception of esports activists
shows that esports is developing in the city of Medan, namely that there are more
gaming communities, more esports tournaments, more game creator content, and
the government has also established the PBESI organization as an esports forum.
Esports has great economic opportunities, namely as an industry that is attracted
by local and foreign sponsors, and provides employment opportunities so that it
can encourage the growth of the creative economy, so that it can become a potential
industry.
With the current development of esports, it can have a positive impact on
the economy, namely as a provider of job opportunities, attracting the attention of
investors, competition in creating games, and the creation of new businesses. There
are also negative impacts from esports, namely health which will be disturbed when
playing games without knowing the time, and game players' finances are
increasingly being spent on purchasing internet packages, game vouchers and
