    Abstract
Microencapsulation is the loading of substances into hydrogels that allows the entrapment of active substances in the hydrogel membrane by bringing together the bioscience of the phases at the micro level, especially as a candidate for making periodontal chips. the purpose of this study was to determine the encapsulation technique using the ionic gelation method as a candidate method for loading Geniotrigona thoracica propolis extract into CMC and HEC hydrogels. The type of research used was laboratory experimental research with post test only control group design. The research samples used were Geniotrigona thoracica propolis extracts with concentrations of 2.5%, 5%, and 10% which were encapsulated and loaded using ionic gelation method into CMC and HEC hydrogels. Tests included particle size analysis of Geniotrigona thoracica propolis extract encapsulation using Particle Size Analyzer, encapsulation success using FT-IR, and clear zone diameter of Geniotrigona thoracica propolis extract against P. gingivalis bacteria growth. The results showed that the particle size of Geniotrigona thoracica propolis extract encapsulation with concentrations of 2.5%, 5%, and 10% were 0.30 µm, 0.28 µm, and 1.39 µm. The clear zone diameters of Geniotrigona thoracica propolis extract with concentrations of 2.5%, 5%, and 10% were 10.25 mm, 13.60 mm, 16.55 mm, respectively. FT-IR results proved that the encapsulation process of Geniotrigona thoracica propolis extract using chitosan-STTP was successfully carried out. The conclusion of this study indicates that the encapsulation technique of Geniotrigona thoracica propolis extract loaded into CMC and HCE hydrogels using ionic gelation method can be a candidate for making periodontal chips.
