Periodontitis is a chronic inflammatory disease affecting periodontal tissues due to bacterial infections such as Porphyromonas gingivalis. Conventional therapies are often insufficient, particularly in deep periodontal pockets, necessitating adjunctive therapies such as periodontal chips containing antibacterial agents. This study aims to evaluate the potential of Geniotrigona thoracica propolis extract as an active ingredient in periodontal chips and to determine the optimum concentration to enhance antibacterial properties against Porphyromonas gingivalis. The study employed an experimental laboratory design with a post-test only control group approach. Antibacterial tests were conducted on periodontal chips containing propolis extract at various concentrations (2.5%, 5%, and 10%) using the Kirby-Bauer diffusion method. The results showed that no inhibition zones formed around the periodontal chips at any of the tested concentrations. This indicates that Geniotrigona thoracica propolis extract in the current chip formulation did not exhibit significant antibacterial effects against Porphyromonas gingivalis. In conclusion, Geniotrigona thoracica propolis extract at the tested concentrations did not demonstrate antibacterial effectiveness in periodontal chip applications. Further studies are needed to modify the formulation, extraction methods, or combine it with other materials to enhance its antibacterial potential.
