The research aims to evaluate the effectiveness of the Online Public Access Catalog (OPAC) system at the Library of University of Islam Sumatera Utara (UISU) in the information retrieval system using recall. This research compared the recall values between simple search and subject-based search. The research method used was quantitative with a comparative experimental approach, and the data samples were taken from the entire collection in the UISU Library. The research results showed that the effectiveness of the retrieval system based on recall in subject-based search had an average recall value of 82%, which was higher than the simple search, which had an average recall value of 66%. This indicated that the subject-based method was more effective than the simple search. Thus, this research provided recommendations for optimizing the OPAC system, particularly in enhancing the function of subject-based search.
