dc.description.abstract | Fixed orthodontic treatment takes a long time which causes the orthodontic wire to be in continuous contact with the unstable oral cavity environment and causing corrosion. One of the factors that triggers corrosion and surface roughness of orthodontic wire is the use of mouthwash. Fragrant pandan leaves (Pandanus amaryllifolius Roxb.) mouthwash tends to have minimal side effects and can act as a corrosion inhibitor so that it can be used as an alternative mouthwash. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of fragrant pandan leaf mouthwash (Pandanus amaryllifolius Roxb.) at concentrations 0.1%, 0.2% and 0.4% on the corrosion rate and surface roughness of wire that immersed for 7, 14 and 21 days. This type of research is a laboratory experimental study. The sample of this study was a stainless steel orthodontic wire with a diameter of 0.016 inches and a length of 5 cm. The samples were divided into 15 groups, which is orthodontic wires immersed in artificial saliva, 0.2% chlorhexidine, fragrant pandan leaves (Pandanus amaryllifolius Roxb.) mouthwash 0.1%, 0.2% and 0.4% for 7, 14 and 21 days. The corrosion rate was measured using the weight loss method and surface roughness was measured with a profilometer then tested statistically using One Way Anova. The results of this study indicate that the highest average corrosion rate and roughness were in 0.2% chlorhexidine and the lowest in artificial saliva both at 7, 14 and 21 days of immersion. The conclusion of this study is that fragrant pandan leaves (Pandanus amaryllifolius Roxb.) mouthwash with a concentration of 0.4% is more effective in reducing the corrosion rate and surface roughness of stainless steel orthodontic wires than 0.2% chlorhexidine mouthwash. | en_US |
