Microplastics are small pieces of large plastics that measure 1-5 mm and become a type of marine debris that becomes an obstacle because of its very small size and can be consumed by marine biota. This study aims to determine the characteristics of microplastics based on type, size, color and polymer and their distribution in water in the Coastal Region of Sumatra Island. The research method was carried out by purposive sampling by selecting 10 research locations. The data analysis method uses the comparison between the number of microplastic particles and the amount of filtered water (m³). The results found 5 types of microplastics, namely fragments, fibers, films, foam and pellets. The most microplastic color found is black as many as 1504 particles. The largest size of microplastics in the size range of 1000-2000 μm, as many as 1108 particles. The polymer constituent of microplastics most often found at the research site is Nylon polymer. The distribution of microplastics was highest in the Belawan area with an abundance of 4.94 particles/m³.en_US
