The success of resin composite restorations is influenced by the finishing and polishing procedures, which is expected to produce a smooth and glossy surface. The surface glossiness of the composite resins can be achieved with the use of finishing and polishing instrument and proper polishing techniques. Loose abrasive polishing paste is one of the polishing technique that is commonly used in multi-step polishing systems. The rotary instrument used to apply loose abrasives polishing paste can be in the form of abrasive materials, namely rubber cups and non-abrasive materials, namely felt cones. Currently, the polishing paste made from blood clam shells (Anadara granosa) is still being developed.
The purpose of this study to determine the difference in the effect of using rubber cup and felt cone on nanohybrid composite resin restorations polished using blood clam shell paste (Anadara granosa) and commercial paste. This laboratory experimental study utilized a post-test only control group design. This study used 24 maxillary first incisor teeth that were Class V prepared and restored with nanohybrid composite resin. The samples were then divided into six treatment groups namely the polishing group using a paste made from blood clam shells with rubber cup and felt cone burs; polishing group using commercial paste with rubber cup and felt cone burs; polishing group using only rubber cup and felt cone burs. The surface gloss of the samples was tested using glossmeter ETB-0686, China. Statistical analysis was performed using One Way ANOVA and Post Hoc LSD (Least Significant Difference) test with the degree of significance a=0.05. One Way ANOVA test results obtained significance value of p=0.000, which indicates there is a significant difference between the six between the six treatment groups (p<0.05). The use of blood clam shells (Anadara granosa) based polishing paste with rubber cup bur can improve the glossiness of the surface of nanohybrid composite resin restorations.
