Activated charcoal is a porous material with a high pore volume. Sugar palm fronds
waste has the potential to be a raw material for the activated charcoal productionas water
purifier. This study aims to evaluate the effect of chemical activation on activated charcoal from sugar palm fronds. Pyrolysis of sugar palm fronds was conducted at 350-400℃ for 6 hours. The pyrolyzed charcoal was activated using physical method with temperature (600°C and 700℃) and time 60 minute, afterward the activated charcoal will be impregnated for
24 hours in 1% and 2% Zncl solution. The characteristics of activated charcoal were evaluated in terms of weight change, proximate test, and iodine number. The results showed that the weight change charcoal ranged from 0.12-0.56%; moisture content of 2.11-8.14%; ash content of 10.25-13.81%; volatile matter of 0.55-1.14%; fixed carbon 76.95-86.51%; as well as iodine number of 902.73-958.08 mg/g, respectively. Statistically, the temperature treatment showed a significant effect on all parameters of influence but the temperature and concentration factors did not show an interaction between the two except on weight change. The value of active charcoal produced meets SNI 06-3730 1995.
