Belawan Port, 1983-1992
Abstract
This study discusses Belawan Port in 1983-1992. The purpose of this
study is to explain the development of Belawan Port in terms of facilities,
management and activities throughout 1983-1992. The research method used is
the historical research method, with steps such as heuristics, criticism,
interpretation, and historiography. Data were collected through observation or
interviews, and literature studies sourced from books, scientific works, and
WASPADA newspaper archives. This study describes the development and
management of Belawan Port since it was opened in 1890 during the Dutch
colonial government until the period 1983-1992. This port was built as a
replacement for Labuhan Deli Port which could no longer be used due to
sedimentation. Belawan Port during the Dutch colonial period had experienced
very advanced development with the construction of several facilities and
infrastructure. Meanwhile, in 1983-1992 it can also be said that the construction
of facilities and infrastructure at Belawan Port made Belawan Port modern. This
is inseparable from the construction of the Container Terminal at Belawan Port
and the construction of the Belawan-Medan-Tanjung Morawa (Belmera) Toll
Road as a supporting infrastructure facility for economic activities at Belawan
Port to be more efficient. With the development or addition of facilities and
infrastructure at Belawan Port, it provides a very significant increase in economic
activities at Belawan Port such as the loading and unloading of container systems,
in addition, these developments also have positive and negative impacts on
Belawan Port and the lives of the people around Belawan Port.
