This research is about the story of two people named Katie and Alex who
experience the struggle of love in the film Safe Haven directed by Lasse Hallström.
They become symbols of love in healing and a safe place in the film Safe Haven.
This research aims to find out the characterization played by the main characters
and themes in the film Safe Haven. This research uses the theory of characterisation
proposed by M. J. Murphy and the concept of intrinsic by Robert Stanton. In
completing this research, the method used is descriptive qualitative. The results of
this study show that the main characters, Katie and Alex, have different
backgrounds and traits as well as themes that highlight the development of the main
characters. The results showed nine forms of character portrayal of the main
characters, ranging from physical descriptions, characters seen by others, speech,
past lives, conversations of others, reactions, direct comments, thoughts, and
behaviour. Meanwhile, the themes of this movie is Katie finding a safe place
through love that shows Katie's character development.
