The Relationship between Family Support and Physical Activity of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus Sufferers in Meranti Timur Village
Abstract
Type 2 diabetes mellitus is a global health problem that requires effective management, including physical activity. Family support plays an important role in encouraging physical activity in people with type 2 diabetes mellitus. This study aims to analyze the relationship between family support and physical activity in people with type 2 diabetes mellitus in Meranti Timur Village. This study uses a quantitative method with a descriptive correlation design involving 73 respondents selected using a simple random sampling technique. The results obtained from this study, low family support 44 people (60.3%) high family support 29 people (39.7%). Then high physical activity 39 people (53.4%) low activity 34 people (46.6%). Data on family support and physical activity were collected using a structured questionnaire. Data analysis using the Spearman's rank test showed a significant relationship between family support and physical activity in people with type 2 diabetes mellitus in Meranti Timur Village (p = 0.001). The higher the family support, the higher the physical activity of the patient. It is expected that patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus can build good communication with their families to get optimal support in carrying out physical activities. Health workers also need to involve families in the type 2 diabetes mellitus management program, especially in increasing the physical activity of patients.
