Revitalization of the Heritage Melayu Area Souvenir Shopping Center Design with a Juxtaposition Architectural Approach

Abstract

Indonesia has a variety of ethnic groups and unique cultures. This is evidenced by Indonesia having various types of arts, culture, and culinary as well as different handicrafts from Sabang to Merauke which make Indonesia one of the destinations for local and foreign tourists. With the increase in tourists visiting Indonesia, especially in the city of Medan, North Sumatra, because of this, a souvenir centre with the concept of one stop shopping is needed. According to data from BPS (Central Bureau of Statistics of tourist visitors in North Sumatra including Medan in 2023 reached 197,015 visits. The design concept in this project uses juxtaposition architecture which has a function to create dialogue and contrast between old and new buildings. The method used in this project is a leatherative method by using field surveys, observations, comparisons and literature studies as data collection techniques. The results show that by applying the design with the juxtaposition theme, it produces a space that is not only visually appealing but has social and cultural meanings and functions that link the past, present and future in the historic area.
