This research analysis of ryousai kenbo in the main character of Hana in the novel
Ookami Kodomo no Ame to Yuki by Mamoru Hosoda. Ryousai kenbo is an ideology
that means `a good wife and a wise mother` and was born during the Meiji period
in Japan. The purpose of this study is to identify Hana’s attitudes that reflect ryousai
kenbo and to describe how the concept is portrayed through her character. The
research employs a descriptive qualitative method, with data consisting of quoted
sentences from the novel. Data collection was conducted through library research,
and content analysis techniques were applied. This study adopts the concept of
ryousai kenbo as explained by Koyama Shizuko and utilizes the semiotic theory of
Charles Sanders Peirce. The findings indicate that Hana is portrayed as a loyal and
loving wife, as well as a wise, responsible, and nurturing mother in raising her
children. Her embodiment of ryousai kenbo is reflected through her interactions
with her husband and children, as well as in managing the household. These
behaviors represent a wife’s devotion to her husband, dedication to child-rearing,
and commitment to her family.
