    Abstract
Litter plays a very important role in contributing nutrients to the fertility of waters and living creatures in the mangrove ecosystem. The litter decomposition process begins with the process of destroying the litter into simpler particles by macrobenthos. The species of microorganism that plays a role in the decomposition process of A. marina leaf litter is fungus. Fungi have the ability as decomposers, to produce enzymes that can break down organic materials such as proteins and carbohydrates. This research aims to determine the species and diversity of fungi in decomposed A. marina leaf litter, calculate the decomposition rate of A. marina leaf litter and determine carbohydrate and protein levels during the decomposition process. The research was carried out at the Forest Cultivation Laboratory, Faculty of Forestry, University of North Sumatra. Sampling location for A. marina leaf litter in Belawan Bahari Village, Medan, Belawan City. This research method uses a Litter-bag to store leaf litter which will be isolated and the decomposition rate calculated. Determination of carbohydrate and protein levels is carried out at the Medan Industrial Standardization and Services Center. The research was carried out in August 2023 – January 2024. The results showed that there were 6 species of fungi found in A. marina leaf litter with an average value of fungal species diversity of 1.69, which was included in the medium category. The decomposition rate of A. marina leaf litter is 14.60/year. The average percentage of carbohydrate content contained in A. marina leaf litter is 10.22% and the average protein content is 6.424%.
