Introduction. Schizophrenia is a serious mental disorder that affects thinking,
behavior, and emotions, characterized by symptoms such as hallucinations,
delusions, and cognitive impairments. This disorder significantly impacts
individuals, families, and society, with a complex etiology involving genetic,
environmental, and neurobiological factors. The lack of basic knowledge about
schizophrenia leads many people to underestimate this condition, even though a
good understanding is crucial for proper detection and treatment. Objective. To
evaluate the difference in the level of knowledge about schizophrenia between
preclinical medical students of the 2021 cohort and students in the doctor
professional education program (P3D) from the 2019 and 2020 cohorts at the
Faculty of Medicine, University of North Sumatra. Method. The research design
used is descriptive quantitative with a cross-sectional approach, using a
questionnaire as the data collection tool. Data were obtained from 89
respondents, consisting of preclinical and P3D students. Results. The study results
showed generally good knowledge at each stage of education, with the highest level
of knowledge found among P3D students with 44 respondents (62%), followed by
preclinical students with 27 respondents (38%). Conclusion. The study indicates
that P3D students have a higher level of knowledge in the clinical aspects of
schizophrenia compared to preclinical students, who are generally still focused on
basic theory.
