    Abstract
The preliminary plant design of bio-char from corn cobs using a slow pyrolysis process has a production capacity of 15,000 tons/year and operates for 330 days a year. The main process in this preliminary plant design consists of three stages, namely the raw material pretreatment stage, the pyrolysis reaction stage, as well as bio-char and bio-oil separation. In the pyrolysis stage, one fluidized bed reactor operated at 300°C for 30 min, with a pressure of 4 atm. The number of corn cobs required to reach annual production capacity is 5,495.613 kg/hour. The corn cobs-derived bio-char plant using a slow pyrolysis process is planned to be installed in Asahan Regency, Sumatera Utara Province, with a total plant area of 14,382 m2. The water requirement at this plant is supplied from the Asahan River, as much as 3,400.165 kg/hour. The planned form of company organization is a Limited Liability Company (PT) with a line and staff organizational structure and 203 employees. The results of the economic analysis on this preliminary plant design are as follows: 1. Capital Investment (CI): IDR 252,370,130,112 2. Total Cost (TC): IDR 201,345,121,029 3. Profit Margin (PM): 36.01% 4. Break Even Point (BEP): 49.04% 5. Return on Investment (ROI): 32.41% 6. Pay Out Time (POT): 3 years 11 months 7. Return on Network (RON): 54.02% 8. Internal Rate of Return (IRR): 31.85% Based on these economic analysis results, it can be concluded that this corn cobs-derived bio-char plant using a slow pyrolysis process is feasible.
