Preliminary Design for the Production of Biodiesel from Palm Fatty Acid Distillate (PFAD) Using Esterification Process in Vacuum Conditions with Production Capacity 200.000 Ton/Year
Abstract
Biodiesel is a type of environmentally friendly renewable fuel sourced from vegetable oil. Many developments in biodiesel production in Indonesia have been carried out to produce better quality biodiesel, starting from developing raw materials, manufacturing methods and types of catalysts. The main objective of this plant design is to implement the discipline of chemical engineering and to be the initial information in the design of biodiesel manufacturing plant. The method for making biodiesel using a vacuum pressure process is a new method, because several process on biodiesel only use atmospheric or supercritical pressure. The biodiesel manufacturing plant from Palm Fatty Acid Distillate (PFAD) is planned to be established in industrial area of KEK Sei Mangkei with a land area of 33,000 m2, the required workforce is 229 people with the form of a Limited Liability Company led by a director with a line and staff organization system. For the establishment and operation of the factory requires investment capital of IDR 3,488,180,981,221 and production costs of IDR 2,743,614,855,112. Based on the feasibility analysis, this plant has a BEP of 31.41%, ROI of 19.07%, POT for 5 years and 3 months, RON of 38.15%, and IRR of 19.90%. From the results of the economic analysis, it can be concluded that the pre-design of the plant to produce ammonium chloride from ammonium sulfate and sodium chloride by the double decomposition process is feasible.
