It is believed that adolescents are vulnerable to mental health issue. Poor communication between parents and adolescents can lead to mental health problems, such as the depressive symptoms. This research aims to identify the relationship between parental communication patterns and the incidence of depressive symptoms in adolescents at SMA Swasta GKPI Padang Bulan, Kecamatan Medan Baru. This cross-sectional qualitative research is conducted with 81 students at SMA Swasta GKPI Padang Bulan, selected by conducting stratified random sampling. The Revised Family Communication Pattern (RFCP) and KADS-6 are used as the instrument for the research. Spearman's Rho is carried out as statistical analysis. The findings indicate that the majority of the respondents are female (58%), aged 17 years old (59.3%). It is found that the majority portion of parental communication is characterized with a high conversation orientation (75.3%), whereas the conformity orientation is low (56.8%). The statistical analysis indicates a P-0.000 (<0.05), which means a significant relationship between parental communication patterns and the incidence of depressive symptoms. Therefore, it is recommended that nursing care service for mental health increase socialization among parents and adolescents about mental health issue, which aims to prevent depression in adolescents.
