This research discusses the gender marginalisation experienced by Songlian in the film ‘大红灯笼高挂 Dà Hóng Dēnglóng Gāogāo Guà’. The purpose of this study is to explain the form of marginalisation experienced by Songlian's character and to explain the transcendence performed by Songlian's character in facing the patriarchal issue that marginalises him. The marginalisation analysis of the film ‘大红灯笼高挂 Dà Hóng Dēnglóng Gāogāo Guà’ uses Simone de Beauvoir's theory of existentialist feminism. The research method used in this study is descriptive with a qualitative approach. The analysis shows that there are two forms of marginalisation experienced by Songlian's character. The first form is private marginalisation related to sexuality and household affairs and the second form is public marginalisation in the form of complexes about women's rights. Thus, based on the results of data analysis, 8 data of private marginalisation were found. The treatment of private marginalisation such as restrictions in the domestic sphere and sexuality. Songlian does not have the right to express her heart when she has to serve Mr Chen, Songlian is also required to give birth to a son immediately. Songlian is not considered a wife but like other ordinary women who sleep with Mr Chen; then there are 10 data on public marginalisation such as being restricted in movement, always staying at home and waiting until Mr Chen arrives, being treated unfairly as a wife. Songlian also experiences other gender injustices in the family compared to boys her age. Songlian's character faces the issue of marginalisation by making various transcendence efforts. Based on Beauvoir's theory of existentialist feminism, there are 8 data on Songlian's transcendence in the film. The forms of transcendence include studying like a college even though it is only 6 months, social transformation to always declare gender injustice in the family, rejection of bad stereotypes given to women such as weak and spoiled, and efforts to maintain her self-esteem with various daily actionsen_US
