Portrait of The Culture of Poverty in Slums (Case Study: Aur Village Community, Medan Maimun District)
Abstract
This research is for expressing the portrayal of poverty culture in the slums of Aur District. The nature of this type of research is descriptive qualitative, with the approach of case study. The analysis techniques used in this research are pattern pairing, explanative approach, and time series analysis The theory applied in this research is the theory of culture of poverty by Oscar Lewis. The result of this research shows that poverty in an area is a complex problem dan should be solved quickly. The District of Aur is one of the few examples of an area that can be categorized as a slum, due to the location of this settlement near the river bank of Deli River. The people here cannot afford their daily necessities due to the discrepancy between their expense and their earning, because the majority of the people here works in the informal sector, which doesn’t have a stable wage. The
people of Aur District also suffer from poverty because the social gap and the limitation in accessing the various facilities provided by the government. Apart
from that, because the District of Aur is located in the ban of Deli River, the people
here often throw their household wastages into the river. This causes their living environment to turn filthy and vulnerable to flooding which happens often, and it can reach up to 3 meters in height. The people of Aur District depend heavily on social support from the government, without the will to escape their poor situation, and can only accept their situation and condition.
