Synthesis of Sulphate Starch from Cassava Starch (Manihot esculenta) Using Sulphamic Acid-Urea in DMSO Solvent
Abstract
This study examines the Synthesis of Sulfate Starch from Cassava Starch
(Manihot Esculenta) using Sulfuric Acid-Urea in DMSO Solvent. This research was
carried out in two stages, namely, the isolation of cassava starch and the sulfation
reaction with sulfamic acid in DMSO solvent with a comparison of sulfaic acid:urea
molar variation (1:1, 1:2, 1:3). An FT-IR test analysis of the molar variation of
sulfuric acid:urea obtained optimal results on the molar variation of sulfuric
acid:urea (1:2) which showed a wave number of 1207.6 cm-1 vibration stretching
group S=O. The determination of the best condition of the sample treatment can be
determined by the value of the degree of substitution resulting from the sulfur content
in the sulfate starch. Sulfate starch which has the highest degree of substitution was
obtained with a molar ratio of 1:2 with a DS value of 1.02 and a sulfur content value
of 12.32%. SEM morphological analysis of the optimum variation of sulfuric
acid:urea mole at the variation (1:2), where the morphology of the granules of
sulfate starch fibers which were initially fine became amorphous surfaces caused by
heating during the sulfation reaction compared to natural starches.
