| dc.description.abstract | Premolar tooth extraction followed by anterior teeth retraction in cases of bimaxillary protrusion is one of the factors that can influence pharyngeal airway dimensions. Assessment of pharyngeal airway dimensions is an important basis for swallowing and breathing functions. This study aims to determine the mean, percentage, and differences in pharyngeal airway dimensions before and after treatment in bimaxillary protrusion cases.This analytical descriptive study used retrospective cephalometric data from 26 patients with skeletal Class I bimaxillary protrusion. Measurements included dimensions of the nasopharynx, palatopharynx, velopharynx, glossopharynx, and hypopharynx. Comparisons of variables before and after treatment were analyzed using the Paired T-Test and Wilcoxon test.The results showed mean differences of 0.80±1.32 mm and 0.23±1.25 mm in the nasopharynx, 1.28±2.22 mm in the palatopharynx, 1.50±1.61 mm in the velopharynx, 1.54±2.06 mm in the glossopharynx, and 1.24±2.05 mm in the hypopharynx. A reduction in pharyngeal airway dimensions was observed: palatopharynx by 8.51%, velopharynx by 12.30%, glossopharynx by 11.87%, and hypopharynx by 6.91%. No significant difference was found in the nasopharynx (p>0.05), while a significant narrowing occurred in the palatopharynx (p<0.05), velopharynx (p<0.05), glossopharynx (p<0.05), and hypopharynx (p<0.05).Conclusion is the dimensions of the pharyngeal airway (palatopharynx, velopharynx, glossopharynx, and hypopharynx) showed significant narrowing after treatment in cases of bimaxillary protrusion. | en_US |
