    Abstract
Background: Ibuprofen is a medication that can cause stomach irritation through a local mechanism. Sodium Alginate has a protective effect on the stomach by forming a gel that helps protect the stomach lining. Objective: This study aims to formulate and test the stomach irritation prevention effects of an ibuprofen suspension containing sodium alginate and xanthan gum in rats. Method: A study was conducted to test four different formulations: ibuprofen suspension containing xanthan gum with sodium alginate, ibuprofen suspension with xanthan gum, ibuprofen suspension with sodium alginate, and a 1% sodium alginate solution. Physical characterization was then performed, including organoleptic evaluation, content determination, particle size of the formulation, zeta potential, viscosity, pH, specific gravity, dissolution, sedimentation volume, and stability. The effects on gastric irritation were tested both macroscopically and microscopically, and the anti-inflammatory effects were evaluated using the paw edema method with male Wistar rats as test subjects. Results: The results obtained in terms of characteristics and stability, ibuprofen suspension containing xanthan gum and sodium alginate has a good dissolution rate and has a good sedimentation volume because there is no precipitation. Ibuprofen suspension containing xanthan gum and sodium alginate can reduce gastric irritation which is the same as administration 30 minutes before administration of ibuprofen suspension and has the same anti-inflammatory effect as ibuprofen suspension with xanthan gum. Conclusion: It can be concluded that, physically, the ibuprofen suspension containing xanthan gum and sodium alginate is the best formulation. In the gastric irritation prevention test, the ibuprofen suspension with xanthan gum and sodium alginate was able to prevent stomach irritation. In the anti-inflammatory test, the ibuprofen suspension with xanthan gum and sodium alginate showed the best antiinflammatory effect.
