Periodontitis is an inflammatory disease of the gingiva in the supporting tissues of the teeth caused by certain groups of microorganisms, which results in progressive destruction of the periodontal ligament and alveolar bone with increasing probing depth. Macrophages are the main mononuclear phagocytic cells in tissues for phagocytosis of microbes and other foreign molecules. Tamarind fruit or Tamarindus indica L is one of the widely used medicinal plants. The parts of the Tamarindus indica L. plant that are commonly used for treatment include the leaves, bark, fruit flesh, and seeds which can be anti-inflammatory. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of the application of tamarind fruit gel (Tamarindus Indica L.) on the number of macrophage cells in male wistar rats induced by periodontitis. The type of research used is experimental research with Post Test Control Group Design. The results of this study showed that tamarind fruit gel applied to the lower jaw of male wistar rats had an effect on the average number of macrophage cells on the 3rd and 7th post-application days in the form of a decrease in the number of macrophage cells. Further research is needed on the effect of applying tamarind fruit gel (Tamarindus Indica L.) as an anti-inflammatory in vivo so that this material can be applied clinically.
