Background. Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is an infectious disease caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus. D-dimer is a biomarker of fibrin breakdown and formation. Thrombotic complications in COVID-19 infection will affect D-dimer levels in COVID-19 patients. Aim. This study aims to determine the correlation between D-dimer levels and the severity of COVID-19 patients treated at the Hajj Adam Malik Hospital in 2021, Methods. This study is an observational analytic study with a cross sectional design. This study used the consecutive sampling method, where after calculating using the Slovin formula, the number of samples needed was 100 samples. The subjects in this study were COVID-19 patients who were admitted to the Haji Adam Malik Hospital Medan in 2021. The data used is secondary data obtained from patient medical records. The analysis used was univariate and bivariate analysis with chi-square. Results. This study involved 100 COVID-19 patients who consisted of 51 people (51%) female, with patients aged > 50 years as many as 64 people (64%). There were 68 people (68%) who had comorbidities, 60 people (60%) with a moderate degree of COVID-19, 80 people (80%) successfully became survivors of COVID-19 and 61 people (61%) had high D-dimer levels. The results of statistical analysis showed an association between D-dimer levels and the severity of COVID-19 (p=0.001).Conclusion. There is a correlation between D-dimer levels and the severity of COVID-19 patients.en_US
