The Effects Test of Nanoherbal Gagatan Harimau Leaves (Paraboea leuserensis B.L.Burtt.) Against Retina Histology of Male Wistar Rats (Rattus norvegicus L.) Induced By Doxorubicin
Abstract
Doxorubicin is a chemotherapy drug from the anthracycline group that is
effective in inhibiting DNA replication in cancer cells; however, its use may cause
toxic effects on visual organs, including the retina. The tiger gagatan leaf contains
various secondary metabolites such as flavonoids and terpenoids, which act as
antioxidants and has the potential to protect cells and tissues from damage. This
study aimed to determine the effect of nanoherbal tiger gagatan leaf administration
on the histological structure of the retina in doxorubicin-induced rats (Rattus
norvegicus L.). The research used a completely randomized design (CRD) with 4
groups and 6 replications. The groups in the study consisted of T0 (without
treatment); T+ (doxorubicin 0,0019 mg/kg BW; T125 (doxorubicin 0,0019 mg/kg
BW+nanoherbal tiger's claw leaf 125 mg/BW); and T150 (doxorubicin 0,0019 mg/kg
BW+nanoherbal tiger's claw leaf 150 mg/kg BW). The eye organ preparations were
made by using the paraffin method and Hematoxylin-Eosin (HE) staining. The
results show that the administration of nanoherbal tiger gagatan leaf has no
significant effect on eye weight (p>0,05), but significantly increases the thickness of
the ganglion cell layer (GCL) at a dose of 150 mg/kg BW (p<0,05). There is no
significant differences are observed in the IPL, INL, OPL, and ONL layers (p>0,05).
