Introduction: This study investigates the relationship between preoperative blood glucose levels and postoperative leukocyte values in patients with renal abscess who underwent nephrectomy at Haji Adam Malik General Hospital Medan.
Methods: A cross-sectional analytical observational study was conducted at Haji Adam Malik General Hospital Medan from November to December 2024. Total sampling was used, involving 42 patients with renal abscess who underwent nephrectomy. Data were obtained retrospectively from medical records, including demographic information, preoperative blood glucose, and postoperative leukocyte levels. Statistical analysis using Chi-Square was performed with SPSS v24, and significance was set at p < 0.05.
Results: Of the 42 patients, 57.1% were female, with a mean age of 54 ± 5.3 years. Normal blood glucose levels were found in 54.8%, while 45.2% had hyperglycemia. Leukocytosis was present in 64.3% of patients. A significant relationship was found between preoperative blood glucose levels and postoperative leukocyte values (p = 0.014), with most hyperglycemic patients experiencing leukocytosis.
Conclusion: This study shows a significant association between preoperative hyperglycemia and postoperative leukocytosis in patients undergoing nephrectomy for renal abscess. Monitoring and optimizing blood glucose preoperatively may improve postoperative inflammatory outcomes.
