The Effect of Methanol Extract From Marchantia paleacea Bertol. on Kidney Histology in Rat (Rattus norvegicus L.) Inducted by 7,12-Dimethylbenz(a)anthracene (DMBA)
Abstract
Liverwort Marchantia paleacea Bertol. comprises bis-bibenzyl (marchantin), saponins, flavonoids, and terpenoids, which exhibit pharmacological activity including antibacterial, antioxidant, antipyretic, apoptotic, and cytotoxic effects. This study aimed to assess the impact of liverwort methanol extract on the morphology and histology of rat kidneys (Rattus norvegicus L.) produced by 7,12-Dimethylbenz[a]Anthracene (DMBA). This study employed a completely randomized design (CRD), comprising K0: untreated normal rats, K-: rats induced with DMBA, K+: rats induced with DMBA and treated with Doxorubicin, and treatments of P1, P2, P3, which received liverwort methanol extract at doses of 50 mg/kg BW, 100 mg/kg BW, and 150 mg/kg BW, respectively. Observations encompass color, shape, weight, and renal histology (glomerular diameter, proximal tubule constriction, and necrosis). The findings indicated that the administration of liverwort methanol extract Marchantia paleacea Bertol. did not influence the morphological characteristics, including kidney color and form. Significant variations (p<0.05) were seen in kidney weight and histological characteristics, including glomerular diameter, proximal tubule constriction, and necrosis. A dosage of 150 mg/kgBW of Marchantia paleacea Bertol. was the most effective in enhancing kidney shape and histology in rats subjected to 7,12-Dimethylbenz(a)Anthracene (DMBA) induction.
