dc.description.abstract | Propylene glycol is a chemical substance in the form of a clear, thick, colorless
liquid with a slight odor, a slightly bitter taste, and low vapor pressure. Propylene
glycol can be used as a surfactant, humectant, antifreeze agent, solvent,
preservative, and detergent formulation component. In addition, in the
pharmaceutical field, this compound functions as a humectant, solvent, lubricant,
fermentation and mold growth inhibitor, disinfectant, and solubility enhancer.
The preliminary design of a propylene glycol manufacturing plant from
glycerol as the raw material is planned with a production capacity of 40,000 tons
per year, operating for 330 days per year. The plant is planned to be located in
Ujung Tanjung, Rokan Hilir Regency, Riau. The purpose of this preliminary plant
design is to apply chemical engineering knowledge, including mass and energy
balances, equipment specifications, chemical engineering operations, utilities, and
other areas of chemical engineering.
The economic evaluation results for the propylene glycol plant using the
catalytic hydrogenation method are as follows:
Total investment cost : Rp1,651,640,852,511
Production cost : Rp947,006,578,296
Sales revenue : Rp1,439,999,985,600
Net profit : Rp328,502,971,279
Profit margin : 29.247%
Break-even point : 50.18%
Return on investment : 19.889%
Pay out time : 5 years 1 month
Return on network : 33.149%
Internal rate of return : 8.564%
Based on the economic analysis, it can be concluded that the establishment
of a propylene glycol manufacturing plant from glycerol using the catalytic
hydrogenation method is feasible. | en_US |
