    Abstract
The palm oil processing process leaves behind waste in the form of empty palm fruit bunches (TKKS) that have not been fully utilized. The development of renewable alternative energy by utilizing biomass waste in the form of empty palm fruit bunches and coconut shells through a slow pyrolysis process to produce biochar. This study was conducted to determine the characteristics of briquettes made from empty palm fruit bunches based on the quality standards of SNI No. 1/6235/2000. The research methods included the preparation of TKKS raw materials, carbonization process, mixing with a binder, briquette molding, and testing the physical and chemical characteristics of the resulting briquettes. The parameters tested included moisture content, ash content, volatile matter content, fixed carbon content, calorific value, density, briquette burning rate, and flame resistance. The testing was conducted using the SNI No. 1/6235/2000 quality standard method. The results of this study indicate that briquettes made from TKKS raw materials have not yet met the SNI quality standards for briquettes. However, when coconut shells were added as raw materials, the resulting characteristics were: moisture content (≤ 8%) = 7.87%, ash content (≤ 8%) = 7.84%, carbon content (≥ 64%-77%) = 70.37%, calorific value (≥ 5000 kcal/g) = 5,993 kcal/g, and volatile matter content (≤ 15) = 13.92%. This study indicates that TKKS has potential as an environmentally friendly alternative briquette raw material and can reduce dependence on fossil fuels. The use of TKKS as briquettes can also address the issue of waste accumulation in oil palm plantations while providing additional economic value.
