Social Construction of Fear of Marriage among Youth in Gunung Suku Village : Case Study in Lut Tawar District, Central Aceh Regency
Abstract
This research aims to analyze the social construction of fear of marriage among youth in Gunung Suku Village, Lut Tawar District, Aceh Tengah Regency, with a focus on the high cost of wedding ceremonies. Using a qualitative approach with a case study method, this research reveals how social norms, family pressure, and perceptions of social status through delivery are the main factors that shape young people's fear of getting married. Rational choice theory by James S. Coleman is used to explain how individuals, especially young people, make rational decisions in considering the benefits and risks of marriage amidst economic limitations. The research results show that high delivery costs are a significant obstacle for young people from disadvantaged families, and have an impact on the decision to end or even cancel a marriage. In addition, the involvement of families, as well as traditional and religious leaders, plays an important role in the mediation and delivery value negotiation process. This research suggests the need for a more rational and flexible approach in implementing the hantaran tradition so that it does not become an obstacle for the younger generation in forming a family.
