Young Generation in Medan City's Perception of the ‘Marriage Is Scary’ Trend on Social Media
Abstract
Marriage has experienced changing views in recent years, especially among the younger generation due to technological advances such as the emergence of new media, such as social media. The marriage is scary trend that spread on social media provides an overview of the fears and concerns about marriage. Cultivation theory introduced by Gerbner explains about media exposure that can continuously shape people's perceptions and views of social reality. This study aims to see the influence of the marriage is scary trend on social media on the perceptions of young people in Medan city regarding marriage. This research uses quantitative methods with data collection techniques through distributing questionnaires using a Likert scale that has gone through validity tests and reliability tests. The population in this study is the young generation of Medan city aged 25-29 years with a sample size of 347 respondents. Analysis data used in this study are descriptive analysis, spearman correlation analysis, independent samples test, ANOVA test and chi squared test. The results of the research analysis using spearman correlation on the perception variable with marriage is scary showed an influence with the category of moderate strength on the marriage is scary trend on social media in forming negative perceptions among the younger generation regarding marriage. Based on the results of the ANOVA test, the characteristics of the time of using social media per day have an influence on the perception variable and the marriage is scary variable, then on the characteristics of the frequency of seeing marriage is scary trends on social media also have an influence on the marriage is scary variable. In this study, the marriage is scary trend is influential in shaping young people's negative perceptions of marriage. Social media is the main source of information that influences young people's anxiety about relationships with in-laws, financial problems, restrictions on freedom, marriage and partner relationships.
