dc.description.abstractIn this research, the synthesis and characterisation of the raw materials of activated carbon of oil palm empty fruit bunches and natural iron sand as an adsorbent for heavy metal copper using a composition ratio of 1 : 1, 5 : 3, 3 : 5. Natural iron sand was synthesised by coprecipitation method to obtain pure magnetite material as a binder in the adsorption process and palm empty fruit bunch carbon was activated with 1 N CH3COONa. The synthesised Fe3O4/C composite was then characterised using X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) to determine the crystal phase and crystal parameters, Fourier Transform Infrared (FT-IR) to determine the functional groups of Fe3O4/C, Scanning Electron Microscopy-Energy Dispersive X-Ray (SEM-EDS) to determine the surface and mapping of constituent elements, Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy (AAS) to determine the percentage of absorption of heavy metal copper by Fe3O4/C. XRD test results obtained crystal phase formed Fe3O4 with cubic crystal system and lattice parameters a = b = c = 8,3750Å. The FT-IR test results obtained the presence of Fe O groups representing the formation of the Fe3O4 structure and there are C = O, O-H groups representing the formation of activated carbon functional groups. SEM-EDS analysis results of Fe3O4/C 1:1 particle size of 79,97 μm, Fe3O4/C 5:3 by 98,91 μm, and Fe3O4/C 3 :5 by 83 μm. AAS test results obtained absorption efficiency of the three samples 99,8% with adsorption capacitance of 0,377 mg/g.en_US
