    Abstract
Lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) is a vegetable plant that is generally consumed by the community for its leaves as a source of high vitamin C. Excessive and continuous use of inorganic fertilizers can have a negative impact on soil fertility. Therefore, the use of organic fertilizers such as chicken manure is an environmentally friendly alternative because it can increase the organic matter content of the soil. In addition, proper planting distance can reduce competition between plants in obtaining light, water, and nutrients, so that it can support plant growth and yield. This research was conducted in Sempajaya Village, Berastagi District, Karo Regency, North Sumatra. This location is at coordinates 3º11'03'' E and 98º30'54''S with an altitude of ± 900 m above sea level via Global Positioning System starting from October to December 2024; used a Factorial Randomized Complete Block Design consisting of 2 factors with 3 replications. The first factor is various planting distances: 40 x 20 cm, 30 x 20 cm, 20 x 20 cm. The second factor is the dose of chicken manure: 0, 8, 16, 24 tons/ha. Plant height, number of leaves, stem diameter, total fresh weight, fresh weight of crown, fresh weight of root, fresh weight of sale, the highest harvest index was obtained from a planting distance of 30 x 20 cm which was not significantly different from a planting distance of 20 x 20 cm. A planting distance of 20 x 20 cm significantly produced the highest total fresh weight/1,6m2. A dose of chicken manure of 24 tons/ha significantly produced the highest plant height, number of leaves, stem diameter, total fresh weight, fresh weight of crown, fresh weight of root, fresh weight of sale, harvest index, and total fresh weight/1,6m2. The interaction between planting distance and dose of chicken manure had no significant effect on all observed parameters.
