Addition of Barangan Banana Stem (Musa acuminata Colla) Fiber Nanoparticle Powder with Red Dragon Fruit Extract Staining to the Colour of Hot Polymerized Acrylic Resin
Abstract
The addition of natural fibers in hot polymerized acrylic resins can improve mechanical properties but make the color unaesthetic so natural staining is done using 15% red dragon fruit extract. The purpose of this study was to determine the difference in colour of hot polymerised acrylic resin after adding barangan banana stem fibre nanoparticle powder with 15% red dragon fruit extract colouring. The research samples were 10 plate-shaped hot polymerised acrylic resins for each group, namely group 1 (without the addition of fibre nanoparticle powder), group 2 (addition of 0.5% weight fibre nanoparticle powder), group 3 (addition of 1% weight fibre nanoparticle powder), and group 4 (addition of 1.5% weight fibre nanoparticle powder). The barangan banana stem fibres were first alkalised with 5% NaOH for 1 hour and then stained with 15% red dragon fruit extract. The fibres were dried in a drying cabinet (37ºC) for 24 hours, then the fibres were ground into powder and freeze dried to reduce the moisture content of the fibres for 1 day at -60ºC. The powder was then ball milled at 800 rpm for 30 minutes, rested at room temperature for 1 hour, ball milling again at 300 rpm for 3 hours to obtain nanoparticle powder. Nanoparticle powder was added to acrylic resin, followed by acrylic filling into the mould and curing in a waterbath at 74°C for 2 hours and 100°C for 1 hour, polishing and finishing. Colour measurement was done using a colorimeter. Statistical tests were conducted using One-Way ANOVA and Bonferonni post hoc (p<0.05). It was found that the L* value increased as the concentration of barangan banana stem fibre nanoparticle powder added to acrylic resin increased, while the a* and b* values decreased as the concentration of fibre nanoparticle powder increased. There were significant differences in L*, a*, b* values between groups of hot polymerised acrylic resins after the addition of barangan banana stem fibre nanoparticle powder with 0%, 0.5%, 1%, 1.5% weight red dragon fruit extract staining. It can be concluded that the higher the concentration of nanoparticle powder added, the brighter the acrylic resin produced, and the lower the colour intensity.
