The establishment of HMI was motivated by the absence of Islamic student organizations the grew in Medan City in the 1950s and had hosted the 5th of Congress HMI in 1957. Although HMI is independent, in politics HMI is alwasy associated as an underbow of the Masyumi Party, especially since this organization has very close relations with Islamic mass organizations in Medan City, especially Al-Jam’iyatul Washliyah and Muhammadiyah, which are special members of Masyumi Party. During the Old Order goverment, HMI faced the Communist movement and was almost disbanded by the goverment due to pressure from the Indonesian Communist Party. Throughtout 1966-1998, several historical records of HMI in Medan City include the large number of HMI cadres who joinde pilitical parties and the New Order goverment, rejected the NKK/BKK, the establishment of the HMI secretariat in 1980, and hosted the 15th Congress HMI in 1983, rejecting SDSB, establishing foundations of non-governmental organizations, playing a role in the 1998 reform movement, and actively developing Islamic preaching and community service.
