This study discusses the history of the Islamic Students Association (HMI) organization in Medan City (1952-1998). The purpose of this study is to describe the general conditions of Medan City before the formation of the HMI organization, analyze the history and development of the HMI organization in Medan City from 1952-1966, and analyze the history and development of the HMI organization in Medan City from 1966-1998. This methods used in this study consist of heuristics (collecting sources), verification (criticism of sources), intepretation, and historiography (writing). Field-based research and literature study. The theories used are Development Theory, Political Participation Theory, Political Theory, Pressure Group Theory, Civil Society Theory and Cycle Theory. Reseach shows that HMI in Medan City was established after the recognition of Indonesian independence, precisely in 1952, which was line the growth of existing universities, especially the Islamic University of North Sumatra and the University of North Sumatra. The establishment of HMI was motivated by the absence of Islamic student organizations the grew in Medan City in the 1950s and had hosted the 5th of Congress HMI in 1957. Although HMI is independent, in politics HMI is alwasy associated as an underbow of the Masyumi Party, especially since this organization has very close relations with Islamic mass organizations in Medan City, especially Al-Jam’iyatul Washliyah and Muhammadiyah, which are special members of Masyumi Party. During the Old Order goverment, HMI faced the Communist movement and was almost disbanded by the goverment due to pressure from the Indonesian Communist Party. Throughtout 1966-1998, several historical records of HMI in Medan City include the large number of HMI cadres who joinde pilitical parties and the New Order goverment, rejected the NKK/BKK, the establishment of the HMI secretariat in 1980, and hosted the 15th Congress HMI in 1983, rejecting SDSB, establishing foundations of non-governmental organizations, playing a role in the 1998 reform movement, and actively developing Islamic preaching and community service.en_US
