This thesis is entitled Sayur Matua Ceremony of Simalungun Ethnic: Semiotic Study.
This study aims to describe the stages, forms, functions, and meanings of symbols
found in the Sayur Matua traditional ceremony. The theory used for analysis is the
semiotic theory proposed by Charles Sanders Pierce. The method used in the study
is a descriptive method with semiotic analysis. The results obtained from this study
are: (1) there are 14 stages carried out when carrying out the Sayur Matua traditional
ceremony, (2) there are 22 forms of symbols in the Sayur Matua traditional
ceremony, consisting of 4 categories, namely 8 equipment symbols, 5 food symbols,
5 status symbols, 4 time symbols. (3) there are 18 functions of the Sayur Matua
symbols consisting of 3 categories, namely 8 equipment symbol functions, 5 food
symbol functions, 5 meanings of symbols indicating social status. (4) there are 18
meanings of symbols in the Sayur Matua traditional ceremony, consisting of 3
categories, namely 8 equipment symbol meanings, 5 food symbol meanings, 5
meanings of symbols indicating social status.
