    Abstract
This paper is entitled "The Function and Meaning of the Whip as a Property in the Jaran Kepang Art Performance in Kampung Yaman Village, North Labuhan Batu Regency." This study discusses the important role of the whip in the Jaran Kepang performance which is not only used as a supporting property for the dance, but also has symbolic and spiritual values believed by the community. Jaran Kepang, which originates from Javanese culture, in its development has also been preserved by communities outside Java, including in Kampung Yaman Village, North Sumatra. In this village, this art is not only entertainment, but is also believed to have a close relationship with the supernatural world and is part of the local community's belief system. The whip is considered capable of connecting the performer with supernatural powers, marking the start of the performance, and is used to help performers who are possessed to regain consciousness. This research was conducted using a qualitative approach through direct observation and interviews with performers and shamans. The analysis uses Ferdinand de Saussure's semiotic theory involving concepts such as signifier, signified, langue, parole, syntagmatic, paradigmatic, and synchronic and diachronic perspectives to reveal the symbolic meaning contained in the whip. The results of the study show that the whip has many functions in the performance, ranging from a ritual tool to a means of symbolic communication between humans and the supernatural. Every sound of the whip, its color, size, and how it is used carry a meaning that is understood by the community supporting this art. The whip is also a symbol of strength, control, and protection in the performance. In addition, this study also found that Jaran Kepang is not just entertainment, but also an important part of the tradition and identity of the community that must continue to be maintained and preserved. Differences in the way the whip is used among shamans also show variations in cultural practices that still refer to shared values that have been passed down from generation to generation.
