The Role of Language Structure Components in Leveled Book on the Reading Interest Among Upper Elementary School Students in Binjai City
Abstract
Reading interest is one of the key aspects in developing literacy skills among
elementary school students. One commonly assumed approach to enhance this
interest is through the use of appropriate language structure components in reading
materials. This study aims to examine whether the language structure components
in leveled books play a significant role in influencing the reading interest of upper-
grade elementary school students in Binjai City. The study involved a sample of
161 students selected through purposive sampling. The quality of the language
structure components was assessed using an evaluation rubric, while reading
interest was measured using a reading interest scale. Descriptive analysis showed
that the language structure components used in the books were categorized as
“good,” and most students also demonstrated a high level of reading interest.
However, the results of the Spearman rank correlation test indicated that there was
no significant relationship between the language structure components and
students’ reading interest (r = –0.059; p = 0.460). These findings suggest that
language structure components do not play a significant role in increasing students’
reading interest.
