The suitability of reading materials with students’ abilities is a crucial aspect in
developing reading interest at the elementary school level. Leveled books are
designed with careful attention to length and format components in their
presentation. This study aims to examine the role of length and format components
in leveled books on the reading interest of upper elementary school students in
Binjai City. This study used a sample of 161 students selected using purposive
sampling techniques. The research instruments consisted of a rubric based on
KaBSKAP regulations (2022) and a reading interest scale developed from interest
aspects proposed by Schunk et al. (2014). Data were analyzed using the spearman
rank test, which showed no significant role of length and format components in
leveled books on students’ reading interest, with a significance value of 0.740 (p >
0.05). Nevertheless, the leveled books used generally had good quality in terms of
length and format, and students’ reading interest was relatively high. These findings
indicate that reading interest is more likely influenced by other factors such as
content and students’ literacy environment.
