Formulation Of Nanoemulgel Combination Of Cinnamon Bark (Cinnamomum burmannii) Ethanol Extract and Oregano Oil as Anti-Acne
Abstract
Background: Cinnamon contains the main antibacterial compound cinnamaldehyde as well as oregano plants on carvacrol. Based on the mechanism of the content of different compounds as antibacterials will have different targets on microorganisms so that they will mutually increase antimicrobial activity at low concentrations. Cinnamon bark ethanol extract combined with oregano oil formulated in nanoemulgel aims to increase the penetration of active substances in the skin as anti-acne with antibacterial testing of Propionibacterium acnes and Staphylococcus aureus.
Objective: Formulate cinnamon ethanol extract combined oregano oil in nanoemulgel, evaluate the physical quality, physical stability of the preparation and determine the inhibition of Propionibacterium acnes and Staphylococcus aureus bacteria.
Methods: Cinnamon ethanol extract was extracted by maceration using 96% ethanol. Nanoemulgel preparations were formulated with a combination of cinnamon ethanol extract and oregano oil at various dose ratios, namely F1 (1%:0), F2 (0:0,2%), F3 (0,5%:0,1%), F4 (0,75%:0,15%), F5 (1%:0,2%). Next the preparation was tested for antibacterial, evaluated the physical quality of the preparation, tested for organoleptic, pH and viscosity on physical stability for 12 weeks at room, low, high temperature, cycling test and centrifugation test.
Results: Nanoemulgel obtained were semisolid, o/w emulsion type, homogeneous, spreadability 4,9-7,6 cm, transmittance above 95%, mean particle size in F4 and F5 of 36,56 nm and 51,03 nm, mean PDI in F4 and F5 of 0,67 and 0,56, pH 5,70-6,16, viscosity 8.460-14.169 mPas, stable for 12 weeks at room, low, and high temperatures, stable in cycling test and centrifugation. Antibacterial activity test results obtained strong inhibition zone category (11,30-13,40 mm) in inhibiting Propionibacterium acnes and Staphylococcus aureus bacteria after the preparation was combined and obtained the best formulation in F5.
Conclusion: Cinnamon ethanol extract combined with oregano oil can be formulated in nanoemulgel preparations. F1-F5 were stable at room temperature storage, high, low, cycling test and centrifugation. The potential inhibition diameter of the combination of extract and oil increased after being made into nanoemulgel preparations.
