The Role of Language Structure Components in Leveled Books on Reading Interest of Upper Grade Elementary School Students in Medan City

Reading interest is one of the key factors that supports the learning process and
academic achievement. However, low reading interest remains a challenge in the
field of education. One possible effort to address this issue is through the use of
leveled books designed with language structures that are appropriate for students’
developmental stages. Therefore, this study aims to determine whether the
components of language structure play a role in the reading interest of upper
elementary school students in Medan. This research involved 79 participants
selected using purposive sampling. The instruments included a language structure
rubric based on KaBsKAP (2022) and a reading interest scale developed based on
the interest aspects proposed by Schunk et al. (2014). Data were analyzed using
simple linear regression. The results of the analysis showed a p-value of 0.269 (p >
0.05) and a t-value of 1.113, which was lower than the t-table value of 1.990, so it
can be concluded that language structure component was found not to significantly
influence students’ reading interest.
