Design of Induced Draft Type Water Cooling Tower with 20 LPM Flow Rate
Abstract
Cooling towers are an important component in thermal systems, particularly in Organic Rankine cycle (ORC) technologies that utilize waste heat for energy generation. The efficiency of an ORC system is highly dependent on the performance of its condenser, which demands a reliable water cooling system. In this study, an induced draft type water cooling tower with a flow rate of 20 liters per minute (LPM) was designed. The main objective of this research is to design and determine the main dimensions of the cooling tower components, such as fan, sprinkler, filler, casing, and water basin, based on the thermal parameters and environmental conditions of Medan City. The design results show that the tower is able to reduce the water temperature from 40°C to 32°C with a cooling effectiveness of 66.6% and a heat dissipation capacity of 11.13 kW. Based on the calculation, the main dimensions were obtained as follows: 0.54 m fan diameter, 2 kW fan power, 0.82 m filler height, 0.8 m casing diameter, and 0.29 m³ water basin volume. The components are then visualized in the form of engineering drawings using AutoCAD software. This design is expected to be applied to small to medium scale cooling systems economically with high efficiency
