MANGKALA SEJAHTERA: Sustainable Tourism Fisherman Village Development Model Based on Regenerative Concept
Abstract
Coastal communities in Indonesia, including fisherman villages, often face
complex challenges such as environmental degradation, economic
vulnerability, and loss of cultural identity. Kampung Nelayan Belawan
Sicanang, located in Medan, North Sumatra, possesses valuable ecological
and socio-cultural potential, yet remains underutilized in terms of sustainable
development. This Final Design Project proposes a development model
entitled “MANGKALA SEJAHTERA”, which aims to transform the fisherman
village into a sustainable tourism destination based on a regenerative concept.
The regenerative approach applied in this design focuses on restoring
ecological balance, strengthening the local economy, preserving cultural
heritage, and empowering the community through participatory design. Spatial
strategies are developed to accommodate tourism activities—such as
mangrove trekking, cultural workshops, and local homestays—while
maintaining the authenticity and resilience of the village. The design process
integrates ecological architecture principles, community-based tourism, and
sequential experience design to ensure sustainability across multiple
dimensions.
This project is expected to serve not only as an architectural intervention but
also as a catalyst for long-term, inclusive development, offering a model for
similar coastal settlements across Indonesia.
