Proposed Design and Improvement of Dental Burs Tools with Quality Function Deployment (QFD) and Theory of Inventive Problem Solving (TRIZ) Approaches
Abstract
Dental health instruments are essential components in supporting daily clinical
activities, particularly in dental practice. One of the crucial tools in dentistry is the dental bur. Based on data collected from a dental clinic in Medan Selayang District, the most frequent complaints about this product are that the bur becomes damaged or bent after several sterilization cycles. The product redesign process begins by identifying the core issues using the Quality Function Deployment (QFD) method, Phases I and II. Results from QFD Phase I indicate that the prioritized technical characteristics to be improved are product durability and ease of assembly. QFD Phase II results show that the component prioritized for immediate improvement is the bur head. The redesign is conducted using the Theory of Inventive Problem Solving (TRIZ) by identifying existing contradictions. The solution to resolve the contradiction, based on the Contradiction Matrix, is the application of the Local Quality principle by replacing the bur head material. The implementation of Local Quality involves selecting a more suitable material for the bur head, such as stainless steel or materials with high wear resistance.
