Oxalic acid is a derivative of acid with the molecular formula C2H2O4. In industry, this compound is used as a purifying agent in the pharmaceutical industry and a precipitating agent in rare earth mineral processing; as a bleaching agent in the textile and pulp industries; as a rust remover in metal treatment; as a grinding material for marble polishing and a coagulant in wastewater treatment. The preliminary design of an oxalic acid production plant using passion fruit peel as the raw material is designed with a production capacity of 1,000 tons/year and operates for 330 days per year. The plant is planned to be located in the KEK Sei Mangkei Economic Zone, Simalungun Regency, North Sumatra. The economic evaluation results give Total Investment Cost = Rp173,414,119,623, Production Cost (per year) = Rp119,847,699,297, Sales Revenue (per year) = Rp173,760,505,727, Net Profit (per year) = Rp39,234,485,918, Profit Margin (PM) = 28.948%, Break Even Point (BEP) = 50.024% Return on Investment (ROI) = 22.625%, Pay Out Time (POT) = 4 years 5 months, Return on Network (RON) = 37.708%, Internal Rate of Return (IRR) = 23.055%, From the economic analysis, it can be concluded that the oxalic acid production plant from passion fruit peel using the cellulose smelting process with an alkali solution is feasible to establish.
